PROJECT OVERVIEW The Waukegan National Airport Runway Safety Project is designed to improve operational safety and bring the airport into compliance with updated Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) safety standards. Our goal is to ensure the airport continues serving Lake County as a safe, reliable, and important economic asset for generations to come. This is a safety and modernization project — not an expansion project.
Waukegan National Airport (UGN) is a self-funded, public airport located just 35 miles north of Chicago and the home to private, business, executive and governmental aircraft users that operate in Northeast Illinois and Southeast Wisconsin. Of the 4,500+ airports in the country, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has designated UGN in the top 90 and considered a national asset. Our Impact The airport does not tax and is owned and operated by the Waukegan Port District.
